Los plásticos se están acumulando en los suelos del mundo a un ritmo preocupante, según un nuevo informe del Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Medio Ambiente (UNEP).
La 29ª edición de la publicación Foresight Brief de esta agencia destaca cómo los plásticos utilizados de forma generalizada en la agricultura, desde los fertilizantes recubiertos de plástico hasta las películas de acolchado, están contaminando el suelo y amenazando potencialmente la producción de alimentos y nuestro acceso a ellos.
También están afectando nuestra salud humana cuando se transfieren a las personas a través de la cadena alimentaria.
«Sólo hay una cantidad finita de tierra agrícola disponible», afirma la profesora Elaine Baker, de la Universidad de Sydney, coautora del informe. «Estamos empezando a comprender que la acumulación de plástico puede tener amplias repercusiones en la salud del suelo, la biodiversidad y la productividad, todas ellas vitales para la seguridad alimentaria», afirma.
